Family Self Sufficiency
Family Self Sufficiency Program- HUD’s Best Kept Secret
The Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) Program is a voluntary five year HUD program that public housing agencies offer to families with a Section 8 voucher. The goal of the program is to help families earn enough money that will lead to economic independence and self-sufficiency. Every FSS family works with the Coordinator to define goals, identify barriers and creates a plan of action to achieve success. Another big benefit for the FSS family is the opportunity to earn money while on the program. Over the course of the contract, if the family’s earned income and share of the rent increase, the East Greenwich Housing Authority will deposit money into an escrow account. Once the family successfully graduates from the FSS program, they will receive the escrow funds that had been held in an account for them.
